What about Pickleball?

"Pickleball is more than a game; it's a way to connect, stay active, and find joy in movement at any age."

Getting Started

Starting to play pickleball can be an exciting and rewarding experience for grandkids. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to get started:

  1. Find a Local Youth Pickleball Program: Look for youth pickleball programs or leagues in your area. These can be organized by local recreation centers, community parks, YMCAs, or private clubs. Many communities have growing pickleball networks due to the sport’s rising popularity. Consider factors such as location, cost, and the level of instruction when choosing a program.

  2. Register for a Program: Once you’ve found a suitable pickleball program, register your grandkid to join. Registration typically involves filling out forms, paying fees, and providing necessary documentation, such as proof of age. Some programs offer introductory classes or clinics, which are great for beginners.

  3. Get the Right Equipment: Pickleball requires minimal equipment, making it easy and affordable to get started:

    • Paddle: Choose a lightweight paddle designed for beginners. Many recreational programs provide paddles for initial lessons

    • Pickleball Balls: These are lightweight plastic balls with holes, similar to wiffle balls.

    • Proper Shoes: Athletic or court shoes with good grip and support are ideal to prevent slips on indoor or outdoor courts

    • Comfortable Clothing: Encourage breathable, athletic attire that allows for free movement.

  4. Learn the Rules and Fundamentals:

    • Help your grandchild familiarize themselves with the basic rules of pickleball:

    • The game is played on a smaller court, similar to a badminton-sized court.

    • Teach how to serve underhand, rally, and score points.

    • Explain the “kitchen” (non-volley zone) rule, which adds strategy to the game. Many programs or online resources, such as USA Pickleball, provide clear and easy-to-follow guides for beginners.

  5. Practice at Home or Nearby Courts:

    • Set Up a Practice Area: If possible, set up a net in the driveway or backyard for practice.

    • Use Public Courts: Many communities offer free or low-cost pickleball courts at parks or recreation centers.

    • Practice Basics: Work on serving, returning, and rallying to build confidence and improve skills.

How Grandparents can help?

  1. Attend Practices and Games: Encourage your grandchild to attend all practices and games consistently. Practices provide opportunities to refine their skills, learn strategies, and enjoy playing with peers. Many leagues also host friendly matches that help kids apply what they’ve learned in a fun, supportive environment.

  2. Promote Healthy Habits: Teach the importance of staying hydrated, eating balanced meals, and getting plenty of rest, especially before practices or games. Encourage them to warm up and stretch to avoid injuries and improve flexibility.

  3. Support and Encourage: Offer your grandchild encouragement and celebrate their progress. Whether they successfully rally or win a match, recognize their efforts and reinforce the joy of playing. Help them focus on having fun, learning, and enjoying the experience over competition.

  4. Consider Additional Training: If your grandchild shows a strong interest in pickleball, consider:

    • Clinics and Camps: Many pickleball clubs and organizations offer youth-focused clinics to develop skills further.

    • Private Lessons: For more personalized coaching, private lessons can help refine techniques and improve gameplay.

  5. Be Involved: Be an active part of your grandchild’s pickleball experience:

    • Play Together: Pickleball is a family-friendly sport. Practice with your grandchild to strengthen their skills and bond.

    • Attend Games: Cheer them on at matches or tournaments to show your support.

    • Join the Pickleball Community: Many programs offer opportunities for families to participate in social events and activities.

By following these steps, your grandkids can start playing pickleball in the United States and embark on a fulfilling journey of skill development, teamwork, and personal growth through the sport of pickleball.
